Sobolev exponents of Butterworth refinable functions

The precise Sobolev exponent s∞(φn) of the Butterworth refinable function φn associated with the Butterworth filter of order n, bn(ξ) := cos2n(ξ/2) cos2n(ξ/2)+sin2n(ξ/2) , is shown to be s∞(φn) = n log2 3+ log2(1+ 3−n). This recovers the previously given asymptotic estimate of s∞(φn) of Fan and Sun [1], and gives more accurate regularity of Butterworth refinable function φn. AMS 2000 Subject Cl...

Regularity of Butterworth Re nable Functions

Ai Hua FAN and Qiyu SUN Abstract Let N be the re nable function with Butterworth lter cos2N 2( cos2N 2 +sin2N 2) 1, and let sp( N) be the Sobolev exponent of N of order p (0 < p 1). It is proved in this note that there exists a constant 0 < r = rp < 1 such that ln(1 + rN) ln 2 sp( N) N ln 3 ln 2 ln(1 + 3 N) ln 2 ; (8N 1):

The Sobolev regularity of refinable functions

Refinable functions underlie the theory and constructions of wavelet systems on the one hand, and the theory and convergence analysis of uniform subdivision algorithms. The regularity of such functions dictates, in the context of wavelets, the smoothness of the derived wavelet system, and, in the subdivision context, the smoothness of the limiting surface of the iterative process. Since the ref...

Computing the Sobolev Regularity of Refinable Functions by the Arnoldi

The recent paper [J. Approx. Theory, 106 (2000), pp. 185–225] provides a complete characterization of the L2-smoothness of a refinable function in terms of the spectrum of an associated operator. Based on this theory, we devise in this paper a numerically stable algorithm for calculating that smoothness parameter, employing the deflated Arnoldi method to this end. The algorithm is coded in Matl...

Regularity of Refinable Functions with Exponentially Decaying Masks

The smoothness property of refinable functions is an important issue in all multiresolution analysis and has a strong impact on applications of wavelets to image processing, geometric and numerical solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the smoothness properties of refinable functions with exponentially decaying masks and an isotropic ...
